The Olympics!

Does anybody else get emotional over the summer Olympics like I do? I don't know why--but if I'm not crying when I watch, then you can bet I feel like crying! During the opening ceremonies, the tense competition moments, the medal ceremony--I'm so weepy. Who's with me here? I've always (since I was a kid) felt bad for the Chinese competitors because it seems like they are bred to win (of course much moreso in these Olympics). I secretly always hope they win (because I always imagine severe punishments for them if they don't), even though I hope for the Americans to win, too. I'm so torn!

i'm right there with you with all the crying. i am always weepy lindsay, but during the olympics it's like even weepier lindsay!

i agree about the chinese too. sometimes i fear they might commit suicide, too. then more weeping.

Larson, your comment totally made me crack up.

Yes, I should have said "I imagine harsh punishments and/or suicide attempts." Did you watch the Chinese girl gymnasts last night? They said one of the girls had begged and pleaded with her parents to let her quit gymnastics, but of course they wouldn't let her. Then the commentator said something like, "Thank goodness they didn't let her quit--so we can enjoy watching her." I was so sad for the little thing (who most definitely does not seem 16). It's like she's our slave--flipping and twirling for our pleasure and amusement only. Sad.

Then there was another Chinese girl that one guy said, "Isn't a very hard worker." He added that that's what her coaches said. "Not a hard worker" probably means she only works 12 hours a day instead of 18.

Oh yeah, I am such a sucker for the Olympics. Yesterday, the men's swim relay and the team gymnastics competition were fantastic. At least if I wanted to I could blame my tears on being pregnant.

Oh Jenn, that is just so funny, because I think the same thing about the Chinese! Ella and I were talking last night about what a relief that the girls wouldn't be beaten. But then I saw their coaches hugging them, etc. Is it all just a show for the westerners? I always think I am the only one thinking those things...

It is really sad to think about those poor girls. I didn't know what you meant by emotional until I started watching them. I've been watching them everyday since then. They work so hard, and it really is emotional to watch.
